Essaouira rewards those who linger. Just 2h30 from Marrakech, the City of Trade Winds gives its best to travellers who stay. Here's why I always recommend two days.
The drive that whets your appetite
About 170 kilometres separate Marrakech from Essaouira — roughly 2h30 on the road. It's a perfectly manageable distance, but the drive itself deserves a mention: between the plains of the Haouz, the silver-leafed argan trees and the first breath of the ocean, the journey is already an overture to what's ahead. I always plan to leave around 8h00, so we arrive in Essaouira before the sun climbs too high and the alleyways begin to fill.
Many visitors think of Essaouira as a quick day trip. I understand the idea, and the one-day option does exist — but after ten years of accompanying travellers, those who head back the same evening often tell me the same thing: "We should have stayed." So let me explain why.
What a single day allows you to see
In one well-paced day, you can genuinely touch the essentials: the Portuguese ramparts, the fishing port with its blue boats, the Médina listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a few lively souk alleyways. You return to Marrakech with a head full of images and the scent of sea air still in your lungs. That's already beautiful. But it's also a little frustrating.
Essaouira has this particular gift of slowing time down. The thuya wood craftsmen work unhurriedly, cats lounge on low walls, Gnaoua musicians settle in without rushing. If you're dashing from one neighbourhood to the next with one eye on the clock, you miss exactly what makes this city truly magical.

What the second day truly changes
On the morning of the second day, the Médina is almost yours. The passing groups have left, the light is soft, and the locals smile at you differently — the way they smile at someone who made the effort to stay. That's the moment I love to lose myself in the blue-and-white alleyways, push open a half-ajar door, and chat with a luthier handcrafting guembris.
The second day is also the opportunity to explore the coast and the long beach that stretches south of the city. Essaouira is known for its wind — windsurfers and kitesurfers come from all over the world for exactly that. Even if you're not into sports, walking along this beach, buffeted by the Trade Winds, is an experience in its own right.

The preparation that makes all the difference
One tip I always give: pack a windproof jacket, even in the height of summer. Essaouira is windy by nature — it's its character, its signature. With a good jacket, that wind becomes a pleasure. Without one, it can take the edge off your walk. Add to that comfortable shoes (the Médina is completely flat, which is rare in Morocco!), sunglasses and sunscreen.
The good news: the difficulty level is very easy. Essaouira is accessible to everyone — families, seniors, people who don't walk much. No slopes, wide alleyways, a city built to a human scale.
For booking, plan at least 5 days in advance. A deposit is required at the time of booking, and the balance is paid in cash on the day. Cancellation is free up to 5 days before departure — after that deadline, the deposit is non-refundable.

My verdict after ten years as a guide
Essaouira is not a city you "do". It's a city you feel. Travellers who choose two days come back to Marrakech rested, inspired, with stories to tell. Those who only have one day come back in a rush and a little frustrated.
If your schedule is tight, the day-trip option is still a wonderful choice — I'm not going to put you off. But if you can give yourself a night there, do it. You'll thank me when you're back.
