Why I take my clients to Essaouira on a private day trip

Atlantic wind, a blue-and-white médina, grilled fish at the port… Here's how I experience the Essaouira excursion from Marrakech as a private trip.

The road that changes everything

Three hours from Marrakech, and everything shifts. You leave the golden warmth of the médina behind and discover a city bathed in Atlantic light, where the wind whistles through white-and-blue ramparts. That's Essaouira — and that's why I've been including it in my private excursions for years.

The journey itself is already an experience. We cross the Moroccan hinterland, the argan tree plains, sometimes herds of goats perched in the branches. I love taking the time to stop along the way, to breathe, to watch the landscape change. On a private trip, we set the pace — and that makes all the difference.

Essaouira's médina: a breath of fresh air

The moment you pass through the ramparts, the city takes you by surprise. No dense crowds, no dark alleyways: the streets are wide, the air smells of salt and thuya wood. Blue-and-white façades echo one another from house to house, and seagulls cry above the rooftop terraces.

I guide my clients through the artisans' souks — the luthiers crafting guenbris, the wood carvers, the contemporary art galleries. Essaouira has always drawn artists, and that creative energy is still very much alive in every corner of the médina. We take our time strolling, stepping into shops, chatting with the craftspeople. On a private trip, no one is waiting for us and no one is rushing us.

The fishing port and the Atlantic ramparts

My favourite moment is the walk along the ramparts facing the ocean. The wind can be strong — Essaouira is nicknamed "the city of trade winds" — but that's precisely what makes the experience feel so alive. Below, fishing boats come in fully loaded, seagulls dive, and the smell of grilled fish rises from the port stalls.

I always recommend lunch at one of the small port restaurants, right by the water. Fresh sardines, squid, prawns — simple, generous, and impeccably fresh. It's one of those meals my clients still talk about weeks later.

1 day or 2 days: my advice depending on your trip

The question comes up all the time: is it better to visit Essaouira as a day trip or stay overnight? My answer is always the same: if you have the time, stay. One night in Essaouira changes the whole colour of the experience. In the evening, the city quiets down, the alleyways light up softly, and the next morning you have the beach and the médina almost to yourself.

If your stay in Marrakech is short, the 1-day version is still wonderful — as long as you leave early to make the most of every hour there. With a dedicated private driver, the return journey is very comfortable.

Whatever you choose, I recommend booking this Excursion Essaouira depuis Marrakech – 1 ou 2 jours – Privée well in advance so we can tailor the itinerary to your wishes.

What going private really changes

I often emphasise this with my clients: the difference between a shared group excursion and a private outing isn't just about comfort. It's about freedom. We stop wherever we like. We eat when we're hungry. We leave when we're ready, not when the bus signals its departure.

Essaouira deserves that kind of freedom. It's a city to be savoured slowly, discovered in successive layers — the hidden alleyways, the sunset over the ramparts, the endless sandy beach south of the médina. On a private trip, you have time for all of that. And I have the time to truly tell you the city's story.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the journey from Marrakech to Essaouira take?

Around 2h30 to 3 hours by road depending on stops. In a private vehicle with a driver, the journey is comfortable and you can stop along the way to discover the argan trees and the scenery.

Is it better to visit Essaouira in 1 day or 2 days?

In 1 day you see the essentials: médina, port, ramparts. In 2 days you enjoy a calm evening, a night on site, and a peaceful morning on the beach. I recommend 2 days if you can manage it.

What should you bring for a visit to Essaouira?

A light jacket even in summer — the Atlantic wind can catch you off guard. Comfortable walking shoes for the cobbled alleyways. And a hearty appetite for the grilled fish at the port!
