Why I always take families to the Ourika Valley

Just 1 hour from Marrakech, the Ourika Valley offers families fresh air, Berber landscapes and waterfalls. My travel notes for a perfect day out.

A breath of fresh air just one hour from the Médina

When families ask me how to unwind without spending the whole day in a minibus, I always tell them about the Ourika Valley. About 50 kilometres from Marrakech — just one hour's drive — the city's palm trees give way to spectacular gorges, Berber villages clinging to the hillsides and a river singing below. The change of scenery is instant, and the children feel it from the very first bends in the road.

With the Excursion Vallée de l'Ourika depuis Marrakech, departure is by private, air-conditioned transport directly from your hotel or riad, between 8:30 and 10:00 depending on what suits everyone. Travelling at your own pace with children is a luxury I genuinely treasure — no group waiting around, no rigid schedule.

What the valley has in store for little explorers

The Ourika Valley is above all a succession of breathtaking panoramas. Terraced fields stepping up the slopes, pisé alleyways, women in colourful dress working beside the water… every bend brings a new picture. Children love watching the laden donkeys, the local markets and the Berber artisans offering hand-thrown pottery and hand-woven rugs.

For families who want to go further, the village of Setti Fatma is the starting point for a hike up to the waterfalls. A local guide (paid on the spot — around 300 to 400 MAD for a group of up to 10 people) is required for the ascent. It's a local rule I fully support: these guides know every stone on the path and speak about the valley with a passion I could never match. The hike is rated moderate.

Packing for the day: what I always bring

For a successful family outing, the right gear makes all the difference. Here's what I always put in my bag:

  • Comfortable shoes with grip soles — for children and adults alike
  • Plenty of water — pack more than you think you'll need, especially in summer
  • Caps and sunscreen: mountain sun is strong even when the air feels cool
  • A light jacket outside the summer season: the altitude cools quickly once you're in the shade of the gorges

Good news for families with picky eaters: you can absolutely bring your own picnic food and drinks. It's a flexibility I really appreciate for families with young children.

Lunch by the water — a moment out of time

If you choose to eat on site, the valley is dotted with small local restaurants whose terraces look out over the river. The atmosphere is gentle, the tajines are fragrant and the children can paddle while the parents catch their breath. Budget between 150 and 200 MAD per person for a full meal (starter, main, dessert, drinks) — very reasonable for such an authentic experience.

The French-speaking driver-guide who accompanies you throughout the day will be on hand to point you towards the right spots depending on what you feel like at the time. That's one of the great advantages of the private format: the advice is personalised, not standardised.

What families tell me when they get back

Almost every time, the reaction is the same: "We didn't expect something so beautiful to be so close to Marrakech." And that's exactly what moves me about this excursion. The Ourika Valley isn't a box to tick — it's a chance to breathe, a real encounter with rural, Berber, generous Morocco. The children come home tired, eyes shining, with stones gathered from the river and Berber words learned along the way. That's exactly what I call a travel memory.

Practical information for booking

A few important points to keep in mind before you go:

  • Book at least 5 days in advance — a deposit is required at the time of booking, with the balance paid in cash on the day.
  • Free cancellation up to 5 days before departure. After that deadline, the deposit is non-refundable.
  • Lunch, drinks, any entrance fees and the hiking guide (if you do the waterfall trail) are not included in the package.

If your family is looking for other nature adventures around Marrakech, I also recommend the Excursion Cascades d'Ouzoud depuis Marrakech, or for those who love the desert, the Agafay Dîner Spectacle, Quad et Dromadaire — a hit with kids and adults alike at sunset.
