What I always tell visitors before heading to Ouzoud Falls

The first time I saw Ouzoud Falls

I still remember that morning: leaving Marrakech at dawn, the road stretching out towards the north-east, and then, after about two and a half hours of driving, that deep rumbling sound announcing the falls before you even catch a glimpse of them. Ouzoud Falls is one of those places I recommend without hesitation to all my visitors — families, couples, groups of friends. It's one of the most beautiful day excursions you can do from Marrakech, and it deserves to be properly prepared for.

What I always pack in my bag

The day lasts around ten hours in total, travel included. To make the most of the site, here's what I always slip into my bag:

• Comfortable shoes — the paths around the falls are manageable, but there are plenty of steps on the way back up. Hiking sandals or good trainers make a real difference.
• A swimsuit and a towel — swimming at the foot of the falls is possible, and honestly, it's an experience you don't want to miss.
• Sun cream and water — the site is very exposed, especially in the middle of the day.
• A light jacket — the mist from the falls creates a pleasant coolness, but it can catch you off guard outside the summer months.
• A picnic or cash — you can bring your own food and drinks, or have lunch on site at the restaurants along the falls (budget around 120 MAD per person).

How a well-organised day unfolds

With the Excursion Cascades d'Ouzoud depuis Marrakech, departure is around 8:30 a.m. from your accommodation — pick-up at your hotel or riad is included, which really takes the stress out of the logistics. The journey takes approximately two and a half hours in an air-conditioned vehicle with a French-speaking driver-guide.
