The activity I always recommend — and why every group leaves smiling

A private oriental dance class at your riad or villa: the experience my groups still talk about long after leaving Marrakech.

The activity I recommend first to every group I guide

After ten years guiding visitors around Marrakech, I've seen a lot of activities. Hammams, camel rides, cooking workshops... But there's one I recommend without hesitation, especially for groups of women, bachelorette parties and girls' trips: a private oriental dance class at your accommodation. And every single time, it's the same story — the laughter starts in the very first minute, and the memories last long after everyone's home.

What makes this experience so special is that it comes to you. The dancer travels directly to your villa, your riad or your hotel. No need to organise anything, no taxi to find, no neighbourhood to locate. You're already settled, comfortable, in your own space. And that's exactly what creates such a unique atmosphere.

A professional who puts everyone at ease

The dancer who leads the class has fifteen years of experience. And it shows — not just in the quality of her teaching, but in the way she builds the group's confidence. From the moment she arrives, she creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere. No one is judged on their level, no one is left behind.

She brings all the accessories: scarves, sequined hip belts that jingle with every movement. Those details matter. Dressing up, even just a little, releases something. I've seen women who swore they'd never dare to dance throw themselves into it with the biggest smile on their faces.

What you learn during the class

  • The fundamentals of hip movements and body waves
  • A full choreography, learned step by step and run through again at the end of the session
  • A free-form circle dance to the sound of the derbouka — the most festive moment of all

The derbouka moment: my personal favourite

If I had to pick just one moment from this class, it would be that one. When the music swells, the sequined belts jingle and the whole group finds itself dancing in a circle to the rhythm of the derbouka, something happens. It's funny, beautiful and deeply joyful all at once. It's no longer a class — it's a celebration.

And of course, the entire session can be captured in photos and videos. For bachelorette parties especially, it's a treasure trove of memories. The images speak for themselves.

How to book and what you need to know

The experience is open from age 13 upwards — making it ideal for multigenerational groups, mothers and daughters, and bachelorette parties. Time slots are available from 11am to 6pm, by reservation only.

I recommend booking at least ten days in advance, especially during high season when availability fills up quickly. A 50% deposit is required to confirm your booking, and the balance is paid in cash on the day. Cancellation is free up to five days before the scheduled date.

One important note: if your accommodation is outside the centre of Marrakech, a travel supplement may apply, to be settled directly with the dancer on the day. Remember to share your exact address at the time of booking.

My guide's tip

If you're looking for an activity that goes beyond the usual, requires zero logistical effort, and is guaranteed to bring emotion, connection and plenty of laughter — this is it. I've recommended it to dozens of groups and I've never had a single disappointment. Oriental dance is so much more than a class: it's a moment of sharing that says something about Marrakech, its generosity and its joy of living.

You can book the Cours de Danse Orientale à Marrakech directly on JustMarrakech. And if you're putting together a full itinerary, don't hesitate to combine this experience with other activities — a Visite Privée des Souks de Marrakech or a Hammam & Massage à Guéliz makes for a perfect day.
