What budget do you really need for a stress-free trip to Marrakech?

A cheap flight doesn't mean a cheap trip

"We're going to Marrakech — it's so affordable!" I hear this a lot, and yes, low-cost flights from Europe can indeed be wonderfully budget-friendly. But a trip is more than a plane ticket: accommodation, meals, getting around, activities. Here's how I help you plan your budget properly, so you arrive at ease and make the most of every moment, with no surprises.

The very attractive flight prices often create a misleading first impression. The rest of the budget — accommodation, meals, activities — varies enormously depending on your choices and the time of year you travel. The good news: Marrakech is a destination where you can travel across very different budgets, from the simplest to the most refined, as long as you do a little planning ahead of time.

Standard, comfort or luxury: three ways to experience Marrakech

Just as I do with my desert tours, I always think in three categories when helping a traveller build their budget: standard, comfort and luxury. It's not purely about price — it's really about what will make your stay genuinely enjoyable.

Take riad accommodation, for example: at the standard level, you'll often share a bathroom. At comfort level, the room has its own private bathroom. For a couple or a family with children, I almost always recommend aiming for at least the comfort tier — the budget difference is rarely enormous, but the difference in day-to-day comfort truly is.

But choosing the right category isn't enough: the right location matters just as much. A couple on a romantic break, a family with children, or a group of friends on a hen party all have very different needs — the lively Médina, the more urban Guéliz, the chic Hivernage or the peaceful Palmeraie each offer a completely different experience. Your budget, category by category

Here are the main expenses to plan for (indicative ranges, to be adjusted based on the season and the level of comfort you choose):

• Accommodation: three category levels — standard, comfort (private bathroom, quality bedding) or luxury — and several possible neighbourhoods (Médina, Guéliz, Hivernage, Palmeraie…). • Meals: you eat wonderfully well at every budget level in Marrakech, from small local eateries to more refined restaurants.
• Local transport: the small taxis (petit taxis) are an affordable way to get around the city — you just need to be confident, as not all drivers use the meter. A little tip: if the driver hasn't switched the meter on, from Jemaa el-Fna to Guéliz the fare is around 20 dirhams — have your change ready, state your destination, and when you arrive, hand over the money and step out. A friendly "Besslama" (goodbye) as you go, and that's all there is to it!
• Activities and excursions: from a simple museum entry to private guided tours of the souks or full-day excursions, plan for this category with a little lead time — it's often the one that gets underestimated the most.

One moment to budget a little more generously: the festive season

If you dream of spending Christmas or New Year's Eve in Marrakech, it's a truly magical experience — the city is at its most festive. It is also, between 24 December and 3 January, the most sought-after period of the year: I recommend planning a slightly larger budget than in low season, and booking early so you have the pick of the best addresses rather than making do with whatever is left.

My tips for keeping your budget on track

• Book accommodation and activities a few weeks in advance, especially for a stay between December and January.
• Keep cash in dirhams for the souks, petit taxis and neighbourhood hammams.
• Prioritise experiences that have already been tested and recommended, to avoid any unwelcome surprises.
• Set a little aside for shopping in the souks — bargaining is part of the fun, but it's better to arrive prepared (I've written a dedicated article on my approach).
