The day trips I genuinely recommend from Marrakech

"Which excursion should I choose?" That is by far the question I get asked most, right after "how many days should I spend in Marrakech?". And I completely understand it: between the waterfalls, the desert, the ocean and the kasbahs, the options around the city are enormous — and a poorly planned day can quickly turn into hours on the road for a lukewarm memory. So here is how I make sense of it all, and above all how I help each visitor make the right choice.

How I select the excursions I offer

I only work with partners I have tested myself or whose quality of service I know personally. This is not an exhaustive list of everything that exists around Marrakech — it is a selection of what I would recommend to a close friend. I prefer to offer less, but offer better. Here, depending on what you are looking for, is where I will send you.

For nature and fresh air: Ourika and Ouzoud

If you need greenery and cool air after a few days in the Médina, these are my two immediate answers — but they are not aimed at the same type of traveller.

The Ourika Valley: my "easy" excursion

The Ourika Valley is about an hour from Marrakech. You will find authentic Berber landscapes, waterfalls reachable on foot and local markets far from the hustle of the city. It is the excursion I recommend first to travellers who only have half a day or who are looking for a gentle first encounter with the Atlas. Refreshing, simple, restorative.

The Ouzoud Waterfalls: for a real visual impact

The Ouzoud Waterfalls, 160 km from Marrakech, require more time on the road — but they are well worth the effort. These are the highest waterfalls in Morocco, with a descent into the gorges and, very often, Barbary macaques watching visitors from the cliffs. I save this one for those who have a full day ahead of them and want to come back with photos they will never forget.

For a breath of sea air: Essaouira

Marrakech is a city of earth, warmth and warm colours. Essaouira is its complete opposite: Atlantic wind, a blue and white Médina listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, grilled fish on the harbour watching the seagulls. The change of scenery is total — and that is exactly what most of my clients who go there are looking for.

I offer the Essaouira excursion from Marrakech over 1 or 2 days depending on your pace. If you were only going to do one long-distance excursion during your stay, this is probably the one I would suggest first.

For history and cinema: Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou

On the other side of the Tichka pass, another Morocco reveals itself. The kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the film studios of Ouarzazate — nicknamed the "Hollywood of the desert" — draw those who love history as much as grand landscapes. The Tichka road itself is a spectacle: hairpin bends, villages clinging to cliffsides, panoramic views over the Atlas.

I offer this excursion to Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou over 1 or 2 days. If you are unsure about the duration or the itinerary, contact me directly — I will help you build the option that suits you.

For a total immersion: the Sahara desert

If you have several days ahead of you, nothing replaces a real night under the stars in Merzouga. It is the experience my travellers still talk about years later — not a photo, not a monument, but a night in the silence of the dunes, with the Sahara's starlit sky above them.

I offer guided tours to the desert, departing from Marrakech or Ouarzazate, with fixed dates throughout the season. These tours run on a group system: the more the group fills up, the lower the price per person becomes — and you can sign up freely with no commitment until the minimum number of participants is reached. You can join the Marrakech – Merzouga circuit or opt for the Ouarzazate – Merzouga departure depending on your starting point. Choosing based on the time you have

Here is the framework I use with every group or traveller I accompany:

• Half a day: Ourika Valley — cool air, Berber landscapes, accessible to everyone.
• A full day: Ouzoud Waterfalls — the great natural spectacle of central Morocco.
• 1 to 2 days: Essaouira for the sea air, or Ouarzazate & Aït Ben Haddou for history and kasbahs.
• 4 to 5 days: circuit to the Sahara desert — the experience people are still talking about long afterwards.

Most day excursions can be booked a few days in advance. For multi-day desert circuits, I recommend booking at least 3 to 4 weeks before departure, especially in high season — spring and autumn fill up quickly.
