Turquoise lagoon, salty air and fresh oysters: Oualidia is my absolute favourite day escape from Marrakech. Here's everything you need to know.
Why I take my groups to Oualidia
In ten years of guiding visitors around Marrakech, I've had one rule: whenever someone tells me they're dreaming of sea air, silence and wide-open landscapes, my mind goes straight to Oualidia. This small coastal village, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and a protected natural lagoon, is, in my eyes, one of the most peaceful spots in Morocco. About 190 km from Marrakech — roughly 2h45 to 3 hours by road — it's exactly the kind of break you never forget.
We set off early — departure at 07h00 from your accommodation — to make the most of every moment there. The road winds through ever-changing agricultural plains, olive groves and coastal landscapes that gradually open up onto the Atlantic. A real change of scenery, long before you even arrive.
The lagoon: a setting that takes your breath away
Every time someone discovers the Oualidia lagoon for the first time, the same awed silence falls over the car. The water is remarkably calm, sheltered from the waves by a natural barrier of sand and rock. The colours shift from sky blue to emerald green depending on the time of day and the light. It's exactly the kind of place where you put your phone down and simply breathe.
A boat ride on the lagoon is a moment I recommend to all my groups. Local fishermen glide you gently across the water, surrounded by seagulls and the flamingos that sometimes come to rest there. Bring cash for the boat — that's the custom here, and it's all part of the authenticity of the place.

The oysters: an unmissable ritual
Oualidia is celebrated across Morocco for its oysters. The oyster beds line the lagoon, and tasting freshly harvested oysters with that setting in front of you is a simple, sincere gastronomic experience. If shellfish aren't your thing, no worries: local restaurants offer a wonderful menu of fish and seafood prepared with great generosity. Don't forget to bring cash to pay for your meal on site.
Good news too: you're very welcome to bring your own picnic or drinks to enjoy at the water's edge at your own pace. Some of my groups love settling on the rocks with their provisions and letting time drift by.

The beach and relaxation: the perfect day
Oualidia also has a beach sheltered by the lagoon, ideal for swimming without the big waves of the open Atlantic. The water is gentler there, and both children and adults feel safe. I always recommend bringing your swimsuit and sunscreen — the essentials for the day. The excursion level is very easy; there's no intensive walking on the agenda. This is a day designed for relaxation and discovery, not exertion.
We leave Oualidia at around 16h30/17h00 at the latest for a relaxed drive back to Marrakech, with eyes full of memories and often a few wrapped oysters tucked into the bags.

What you need to know before booking
Booking for the Excursion Oualidia depuis Marrakech must be made at least 5 days in advance, with a deposit required at the time of booking. The balance is paid in cash on the day. Cancellation is free up to 5 days before departure; after that deadline, the deposit is retained.
If you're looking for other ways to escape Marrakech for a day, I also organise an Excursion Essaouira depuis Marrakech and an Excursion Cascades d'Ouzoud depuis Marrakech — two other gems not to be missed, depending on what you're in the mood for.
But if it's the lagoon calling you, Oualidia will not disappoint. It's one of those days you'll still be talking about long after you've returned home.
