Bargaining in Marrakech's Souks: My Method After 10 Years Here

Feeling nervous about bargaining before stepping into the souks? After 10 years in Marrakech, here's my method for turning it into one of the best moments of your trip.

Bargaining is a tradition, not a trap

Bargaining is often what worries my travellers most before they step into the souks. Yet once you understand the rules of the game, it becomes one of the most enjoyable moments of the trip — a real exchange, not a battle.

In Marrakech's souks, the price quoted is almost never the final price — and that's not an attempt to catch you out, it's simply the way commerce has worked here for as long as anyone can remember. Approaching it with a smile rather than suspicion completely changes the experience, for you and for the vendor alike.

My method, simply

  • Take the time to browse several shops before making up your mind — prices vary from one vendor to another for similar items.
  • Never give the first price: let the vendor name theirs.
  • Propose a price noticeably lower than the one quoted, without hesitation — that's the normal starting point for the conversation.
  • Move gradually towards a price that works for you, not just for them.
  • If the price doesn't suit you, you can always walk away — often you'll be called back with a better offer.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Feeling obliged to buy just because you've started negotiating.
  • Bargaining aggressively — the tone always stays light, almost playful.
  • Comparing prices out loud with what things cost "back home" — it doesn't translate here and can cause offence.

What is never negotiable

Food, particularly at stalls and food markets, is sold at the same price for everyone, tourists and locals alike. There's no point trying to bargain over a displayed price at a fruit stall or for spices sold by weight.

A final word

When it comes down to it, bargaining in Marrakech is a bit like drinking mint tea: it's never done in a rush, it's savoured with a smile… and you often leave with a little more than you planned. Sometimes even with a rug you swore you weren't going to buy 😄

So go for it and play the game. Above all, remember the golden rule: if you leave delighted with your find and the vendor is smiling too, everyone has won.

And if you'd prefer to take your first steps in the souks with someone by your side, our private souk tour of Marrakech eases you into the game gently, like a true insider.

Frequently asked questions

Is it considered rude to bargain in Marrakech?

Not at all — it's actually expected. A vendor would almost be surprised if you paid the first quoted price without any discussion.

How do you know if a price is reasonable?

By comparing several shops before buying, and keeping in mind that the first price quoted to a tourist is almost always a starting point, not a final price.

Do you have to bargain everywhere in the souks?

No — food and produce sold by weight have a fixed price, the same for everyone.
