The moment Marrakech reveals itself differently

Some mornings in Marrakech are like no other. The morning I found myself standing in the basket of a hot air balloon, watching the city stir to life beneath my feet, is firmly among them. I've been guiding visitors here for ten years, and yet that morning, I rediscovered Marrakech as if for the very first time.

The meeting point is set well before sunrise, somewhere in the countryside at the city's edge. The air is still cool, with a slight bite to it. You arrive in the half-dark, and then witness something that feels almost magical: the balloon envelope slowly inflating, lit up by the flames of the burner. A spectacle in itself, before you've even left the ground.

The take-off: an unexpected gentleness

What surprised me most was how gentle the take-off was. No jolt, no engine noise. Just a gradual lightness, as if the earth were softly letting go of your hand. Within seconds, the palm trees are below you, then the first ochre-coloured pisé rooftops, then the vast expanse of the palmeraie.

The pilot manoeuvres with quiet precision, using the air currents to steer the envelope. You rise, you glide, you drift — and you begin to see Marrakech as it truly is: a city poised between two worlds, with the dense, labyrinthine Médina on one side, and the snow-capped foothills of the Atlas emerging on the horizon on the other.

What you see from the sky

From up there, the palmeraie takes on an entirely different dimension. Thousands of palm trees stretch as far as the eye can see, woven through with gardens, pools, and riads hidden beneath the canopy. You finally understand why Marrakech was built here, in this lush setting amid the arid landscape.

As the flight unfolds — lasting around an hour — the light shifts. The sky moves from violet to pink, then to that warm, generous gold that is the signature of Marrakech mornings. I've watched passengers fall completely silent, simply looking. It's one of the most beautiful silences I know.

On a clear day, the snow-capped Atlas feels almost within reach. You can also make out the wide avenues of Guéliz, the Koutoubia pointing skyward, and sometimes even the reflections of the Ménara. Marrakech reveals its geography in a way that neither a map nor a riad rooftop terrace can offer.

After landing: a moment of togetherness

The landing is just as gentle as the take-off. The ground crew is waiting for you with smiles. And depending on the operator, a light breakfast or a glass of tea is offered to extend this suspended moment. It's a chance to chat with your fellow passengers — often travellers from all walks of life who have been visibly moved in exactly the same way as you.

I always recommend this experience early in a stay: it gives you a reading of the landscape that enriches everything else in your trip. After seeing Marrakech from the sky, you lose yourself differently in its alleyways, and you look at its rooftops with new eyes.

• The ideal season: October to April, when the light is beautiful and the heat at altitude is still manageable.
• Departure time: always at dawn — flights take place at sunrise to make the most of the best atmospheric conditions.
• What to wear: bring an extra layer, even in summer. It's cool in the basket, especially on the ascent.
• Total duration: allow around 3 hours in total (transfer, inflation, one-hour flight, return).
• Accessibility: children over 8 can board, but each operator has its own rules — check before booking.

An experience I recommend without hesitation

In ten years of guiding, I've seen many faces light up in Marrakech. In front of the mosaics at the Musée de la Palmeraie, around a corner in a souk, at sunset on a rooftop terrace. But something in the eyes of people stepping down from a hot air balloon is different — deeper, calmer. As if they had just seen something that words struggle to describe.
